Planning Ahead for 2020

The hustle and bustle of the holidays is fast approaching but for businesses small and large, that means coming together to prep and finalize those 2020 plans so your company can be prepared for an even bigger and better upcoming year. If you haven’t started planning, now’s the time to stop whatever you’re doing and GET ON IT. We know… it can be hard to plan for the unknowns of the future, but as difficult as it may be, it’s essential to building and maintaining a sustainable business for the year ahead and the years to follow. If you’re having trouble knowing where to start, check out these tips on what to focus on when planning ahead so you can have a successful 2020.

Evaluate and Assess Your Business Plan

If you want to go somewhere, the first thing you have to know is where you’re currently at, right? This same principle applies when developing your 2020 strategic plan. Look at the goals you set for 2019. Did you achieve them? If not, why? If yes, how, and did it have any meaningful impact on your business? If you don’t already, it’s important you have some sort of reporting system set in to place to measure and reflect on your business’ success in order to determine the contributing factors that led to your results. Evaluating what already exists can give you a better idea toward where you want to go.

Set Achievable Goals

Setting goals, both in the short term and long term, is necessary to direct your company’s actions towards success in 2020.  After you’ve assessed what your business needs for the upcoming year, list out your business goals in detail to make sure you have a plan on how you will meet your stated goal so you won’t waste your efforts on something that is actually unattainable. While the goals you set for 2020 should be actively contributing to what you want to achieve in the long run, they shouldn’t be so far fetched that they erode your employees’ confidence. If you want to build a plan that is practical enough to be implemented, establish smaller strategic initiatives that will help bring you closer to achieving the overarching goal.

Communicate Your Goals

When creating your plans for 2020, it’s important that the goals you wish to achieve are communicated across all levels of your organization. By encouraging input from other departments and team members, you can determine how your call to action will impact different areas of your business and create a more proactive, effective strategic plan. There could be potential opportunities in an area of your business that you’re missing out on or resource constraints that make a certain goal less achievable. Collaborating across your organization ensures you’re all working towards one common goal and focused on the same destination point.
