Adapting Quickly to the Unexpected
As we’ve seen in the past year, the unexpected happens. As much as you can try to prepare for dodging road blocks and setbacks that may occur, unforeseen circumstances have the ability to undermine even the most well thought out strategies and plans. Successful companies know that in order to survive in the long run they have to be able to adapt to the one thing that is constant in business: change. Of course, we never know what tomorrow brings, but you can establish a standard system within your organization that allows you to efficiently respond to change and be equipped to handle future unknowns.
Adaptability is a competitive advantage. You’re only able to stay afloat at the speed you’re able to adjust. If you want things to move smoothly within your business when unfavorable changes in your external or internal environment occur, each of your departments must be equipped with the knowledge and resource availability to do just that. By leveraging technology and shifting to digital, it affords your employees access to communicate easily and effectively amongst one another and make more informed decisions. Integrating digital tools, workflows, and approaches breaks down an agile chain of command, destructs enabling hierarchies and allows for greater possibilities for remote working. Regardless of industry, going digital offers businesses more flexibility to adjust to the unexpected.
The value of your company can be determined by how it acts when disaster strikes. Are you able to utilize your resources? Are you able to draw on your strengths to stay relevant? Is your organization resilient enough to tackle the unforeseen? These are all questions you should be asking yourself well in advance before the lightning actually does strike. Knowing that change is inevitable, your business should have well developed action plans for when this occurs. Reevaluate your business processes frequently and ask yourself if they’re up to date with the current climate. Your processes should be as dynamic as the world in which we live in and you should constantly create new ideas for improvements across your organization. Instill the mindset that being able to adjust to change is an embedded process, rather than a one-time thing. By establishing less rigid processes, you’re better suited to recognize when changes are needed, how to implement, and then execute them effectively.
