Evaluating How You’re Doing with Achieving Your Business Goals

Setting goals is an important part of life, both personally and professionally. Determining what you want to achieve, and how you’re going to achieve it, gives us meaning and points us in the right direction to living a fulfilled life. We set goals because we want to see progress, and progress makes us better.

The most successful people know that in order to achieve your goals, you have to have a plan. And if you want that plan to succeed, you must inspect the plan carefully and thoughtfully. Taking the time to regularly evaluate your goals gives you the opportunity to assess your progress, course-correct if needed, and aligns the path you need toward your success.

When was the last time you revisited your business goals? Here are four strategies for evaluating goals to make sure you’re on the right track:

Write them out.

Don’t just think about your goals because then that’s all they’ll ever be – just thoughts. Put pen to paper and physically write out what you wish to achieve. This makes your goals more tangible and increases your chances of sticking to them. A study conducted by Dr. Gail Matthews of the Dominican University of California on the effectiveness of handwriting found people who physically write their goals have a better chance of accomplishing more than those who do not write down their goals.[1]

Break it down.

When you set a big goal, it’s easy to get lost and feel as though you are not making progress towards it. Most goals we set for ourselves are often long-term and complex, and by breaking them down they become more digestible and manageable. Considering the smaller goals you’ll need to accomplish on the way to achieving your bigger aim can help you be more specific and gives you more opportunities for reward.

Develop a plan.

To maintain accountability, it’s important you evaluate your progress according to the specific milestones you’ve set. By creating a schedule to evaluate your goals continuously over time, you are more likely to stay on course. If you find out you have fallen behind, you’ll know what you need to change going forward.

Keep going.

Working toward goals can seem long-winded, frustrating, and maybe even impossible at times. Life happens and challenges come our way but you should always see those obstacles as detours, not roadblocks. If you feel like you are getting nowhere, take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Practice kindness towards yourself and give yourself time to reevaluate if needed. If you’re struggling, talk to your teammates. Ask people their opinions and ideas on what you could do to get to where you want to go. They may help you see a whole new perspective. By thinking of different ways of reaching our goals, it makes us more likely to be successful.
