More Than a Build: Cheyenne’s Support of Purple Heart Homes

Seven days. Hundreds of volunteers. One life-changing mission.

From September 27 through October 5, the National Mall in Washington, D.C., became the site of something extraordinary. In celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, Purple Heart Homes brought together volunteers, corporate partners, and supporters from across the country to build a fully accessible home for a deserving veteran.

For Cheyenne International, the opportunity to support this historic project was about much more than helping build a house. It was about honoring those who have served, strengthening communities, and continuing a partnership rooted in a shared commitment to America’s veterans.

Building More Than a Home

Founded by veterans for veterans, Purple Heart Homes is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing safe, accessible housing solutions for service-connected disabled and aging veterans. Since its founding in 2008, the organization has completed more than 1,800 projects nationwide, helping veterans live with greater safety, dignity, and independence.

The recently completed National Mall Veteran Home Build project brought that mission to one of the country’s most recognizable locations. Over the course of seven days, more than 600 volunteers, skilled trade professionals, and community partners came together to construct a 480-square-foot modular home in full public view. From the first wall to the finishing touches, the project demonstrated what can happen when people unite behind a common purpose.

But the greatest impact of the build extends far beyond Washington, D.C.

Following its completion, the home was transported to Glasgow, Virginia, where it will become the permanent residence of Marine Corps veteran James “Jim” Taylor. For Jim, the home represents more than four walls and a roof. It offers stability, independence, and a new chapter in a place he can truly call his own.

A Partnership Built on Purpose

At Cheyenne International, supporting those who have served our country is a cause close to our hearts.

Our relationship with Purple Heart Homes extends well beyond this year’s National Mall project. For years, we’ve been proud to stand behind the organization’s mission and the meaningful work it continues to accomplish for veterans and their families. When the opportunity arose to support the National Mall Veteran Home Build, we knew it was a cause we wanted to be part of. Cheyenne committed $10,000 to the project, helping Purple Heart Homes bring this remarkable initiative to life. We also invited our customers, partners, and broader community to join us in supporting the mission.

While the National Mall provided a powerful backdrop, the purpose behind the project was much bigger: raising awareness of the housing challenges facing veterans and demonstrating how collective action can create lasting change. For us, that’s what makes this partnership so meaningful. It’s not simply about contributing to a project. It’s about standing behind an organization that turns appreciation for our veterans into meaningful action.

The Impact Goes Beyond the Build

The completion of the National Mall home marked an incredible milestone, but the story doesn’t end there.

Long after the volunteers packed up their tools and the National Mall returned to its usual surroundings, the impact of this project will continue. For one veteran, it means having a safe, accessible place to call home. For the thousands of people who followed the build, it serves as a reminder of the challenges many veterans continue to face. And for the organizations and individuals who came together to make it possible, it demonstrates the difference a shared commitment can make.

The project also brought national attention to the important work Purple Heart Homes carries out year-round. Every home improved, every accessibility challenge addressed, and every veteran supported represents another step toward ensuring those who have served our country have the housing and independence they deserve.

Continuing Our Commitment

At Cheyenne International, we’re grateful for the opportunity to play a part in this incredible initiative and proud to continue our longstanding relationship with Purple Heart Homes. We extend our appreciation to the Purple Heart Homes team, the volunteers, fellow partners, and everyone who contributed to making the National Mall Veteran Home Build a success. Most importantly, we thank the men and women who have served our country. Their service and sacrifice deserve recognition that extends far beyond a single day, event, or project.
