3 Retail Mistakes You Never Want to Make
As a Retail Store Owner or Manager, making decisions is part of your job. Some decisions are easy while some are a bit more complex. When all those decisions fall on your shoulders, it can be easy to get overwhelmed at times. What is critical in moments like that though is the ability to see through the daily distractions and focus on things that make up the core of your business. Check out three of the biggest mistakes you’d never want to make.
Failing to Check ID
We strongly support preventing and eliminating underage access to nicotine (and alcohol) and if you’re a retailer, you should too. Failing to check ID for tobacco and alcohol sales is a big no-no and a mistake that could cost you. Be sure that your staff is trained and adequately equipped to accept or deny age-verified transactions. If you need help with educational or program materials, check out the resources provided by the This is Our Watch program or the We Card program.
Forgetting to Actively Manage your Categories
In a marketplace that is changing so rapidly, it is important to keep an eye on your top categories. Giving them the attention they deserve year round will ensure that you have the right mix of products for your customers. Furthermore, if you have more than one store location, take into account that what is right for one store may not always be right for another. Consumer preferences vary and you need to be sure that your leading categories accommodate those preferences.
Becoming Out of Touch
Surely in all your years on this earth, you’ve come across someone who was “out of touch.” You don’t want to be that person. The retail store industry is constantly on the forefront of new product innovation so make sure that you’re staying on top of current trends and products. Associations or newsletters are a quick and easy way to gain that type of knowledge while trade shows are a great way to see what’s new in person.
